COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is a study of fictional texts from the Victorian period in English Literature to the 20thCentury. The emphasis is on representative authors and dominant literary features of the periods such as social criticism, documentary, fantasy or romance. The authors include George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, E.M. Forster, Virginia Woolf, and George Orwell.

Qualifications and Goals

At the end of this course, the students should be able to:

- Discuss how the novel form has been shaped by larger social and cultural forces

- Discuss the thematic and stylistic thrusts of the English novel from Victorian period to modern period.

- Discuss the enabling pre-texts of the English novels

- Analyse any English novel
